A Journey of Self-Discovery through Narrative Therapy

“You are the author, not the Character”

Being a first year student of BPsych (Bachelor of Psychology) at Samriddhi College, I got opportunity to participate in a meaningful and transformative session called “Narrative Therapy” which was conducted by Psychologist ‘Kapil Sharma’. This session was organized for both Psychology and BBS students to help understand how people can solve problems by changing the way they think about their life stories. The intention of the session was not only to teach us about narrative therapy but also to help us apply it to our own lives. Samriddhi College along with Psychology Club organized an appreciable workshop for us.

Kapil sir taught us voluminous things in restricted time. He said that due to our inner thoughts we behave differently in different situations. He guided us in rewriting our personal narratives, encouraging us to focus on strengths rather than weaknesses. This process made me realize that I have the ability to reshape my story and move forward with a more positive outlook. By sharing my experiences with classmates also created a sense of connection and mutual understanding. In this session, I got many things to learn. First one is, we should be self-honest to ourselves to solve the problem that we are facing. Next is we have a right to demonstrate our emotions, may be through Random Journaling or art. The main goal of this session was to make realize us that “The problem is problem; the problem is not a person”. Kapil sir said that we human beings are not a problem, the problem is problem. We often think that we are the problem but in reality, we are not. We are just not aware of the problem. It helped me understand that individuals should not be defined or blamed for their struggles. This perspective made me reflect my own life and how I sometimes associate myself too closely with my difficulties.

The next thing I learned from this session is before judging or generalizing someone, we should not forget their positive personality. Sometimes people make a problem, but based on that we cannot generalize the person’s whole personality, rather than that we should specify what was the main point that the person is acting or behaving like that. That problem should be specified by time, place, person, context/environment, person intention, and expectation.

Another important part is, if we cannot express our problems or emotions verbally, we can pour down it in paper to ease our complex thoughts. We should not only visualize about any person but also communicate with the same person to solve the problem.

In general, Narrative Therapy session, which uses psychological principles to narrate stories, was a great learning experience for me. I express my gratefulness to Samriddhi College for dedicating itself to provide quality education to each student. I am looking forward for more noncredit courses, and extra sessions to equip myself and compete in this challenging market. The courses I have taken, online or offline, has facilitated me understand myself better and gave me a positive way to deal with problems that may arise in the future.
